trudy told me about how she doesn't think the establishment of the order of deacon in the umc is theologically sound. i hear her beefs with the order - i've largely shared them up to now - but somehow it brought things even further into question, and now i'm thinking, how can i pursue something which i don't fully endorse? should i pursue elder's orders? quit the ordination process?
also - eric, angela, and i (if i indeed become ordained) are all going to perform marriage/commitment ceremonies for gay/lesbian couples on the same day once we're ordained enough to marry and bury (since, as deacon, i at least have those rights - just neither of the "real" sacraments). i'm excited. de-frocking and years of service and patience in the process down the drain - here i come. i think we decided that this would be more effective than each of us attempting to refute that piece of the discipline when we are questioned for commissioning.
ok - really, i've got to work on this paper.

Yay! I like your idea! One of the main things law school has done to my worldview is to impress upon me all of the various, deep, and possibly horrible (if the person turned out to be some kind of risk) ways in which marriage changes your legal rights. Absolutely everyone should have the full and equal opportunity to decide whether or not to make that committment, you know?
it's so good to have the insight of lawyers on your side!
