This is a kind of cool statue of some kind of native - I would guess Mapuche, since this was where Valdivia defeated the Mapuches and drove them into another area - I guess I've just not seen many pictures of Mapuche warriors, since a lot of what I focused on in researching them was about the Mapuche shaman women, called machi. And most pictures I see of both men and women, they're just standing or sitting around their houses with silver jewelry on. Anyway - this is a statue of a native man - looks like he's staking his ground, but they lost, so maybe it just represents the struggle. Ooh - or maybe Valdivia dressed like a native man. Ok - maybe I'll get some actual Chilean history under my belt by the time I leave, and I can tell you then.

I think the statue is supposed to be of Caupolicán, one of the chiefs of the Araucanos. However, it's possible it could have been one of the other Araucano cheifs, too. You're making me reach back 40 years in my head. I'm enjoying the pictures and comments.
